the statement "provided you can get a counter" implies that the counter is not innately present. Of course I understand he doesn't make counters, I used the damn combo in the first place

Throw in a  {Legion's Initiative} and you're in three combat phases making  {Tajic, Blade of the Legion} a 17/17, wit battalion.
