Looking at the current cycle of DD's it seems the fall ones will be throwback decks and spring ones be foreshadowing. (Allowing error for limited sample size here, but seems likely).
As such, the spring set would foreshadow the block after Kaladesh and the fall one be a throwback to Kaladesh. With that system, every block will have a DD.
That aside, SOI-block already has a DD in DvD.

Don't know about that.  Last fall was eldrazi vs zendikar.  A month after bfz was out.  A pattern they had at one time was a pw vs pw at the end of a blocks life every spring.   I think wotc is changing everything up again. The announced a crap ton on Monday.  And nothing has been spoiled for moon yet.   There usually is leak somewhere by now.

Zenikar vs Eldrazi was released late August '15 and contained spoilers for BFZ, but that seems to have been a transition period, as the fall DD will no longer be released before the new block.

I'm guessing people who want the playset have it, where its price shunned people from the decks that wanted a playset. Decrease in demand leads to dropping price.

Doubt it, honestly. It's the promo/judge art so the old karakas will have value still, I think. Plus a lot of decks run multiple karakas now, including some of the "cheaper" options for getting in to legacy, Death and Taxes and Eldrazi. EMA will (hopefully) bring a lot more players in to legacy.

Even so, due to the high pack cost and the interest it'll hopefully generate, I don't see a lot of the staples losing much value.
