I think these are great looking and I am considering doing this.  Question is how much does this decrease the value?  Or does it actually increase the value?  I would be scared to do that to $200+ cards let alone $30+ cards.

If you get a good artist, it does increase the value by at least $25.  On my plateau, I now value it at ~$90.  Volc island (the back is very whitened, so it's technically "damaged") at tcg mid.  Alters are very popular.  If the artist sucks, then yes, it decreases the value.

Key word is you value it at $90. It's like anything else. Value is all realtive.

If you get a good, well-known artist, to alter a card, you can increase the value. You will, however, be limiting the market as some players only want to play with untouched cards.  also depending on the card signatures and the like can definitely decrease value, i.e. anything worth sending into bgs prolly shouldnt be signed or altered.

And to the value, there is always a debate there but if done well just look at eBay and you'll see that they generally sell for at least there actual value and many sell for more.
