This is a pretty straight forward thing to get into so the rules are simple.

create a new topic with the title of the preffered format e.g "standard"/"modern".

Use a real deck irl or if you can, use a digital deck by clicking "play test" on certain deck building websites.

Once a wild challenger appears both roll 20 sided dice and be honest about your roll.

Now each turn you will declare what cards you play and stating your current life/cards in hand means you've passed turn.

A turn should look like this.
T1
Plains
{Doomed Traveler}
20/5

---> I suggest swift play and no afking. <---

I do hope more people get into this and the digital deck method is awesome for testing decks before you buy them.

I suggest trying tappedout.net for a good quality playtest simulator

{Good luck wall gamers!}

What's the difference between standard and modern?

Jarrk

Standard format is all the latest sets like Dark Ascension Innistrad and Avacyn Restored also m13 Return to ravnica and gate crash. Those sets are all legal in standard. Modern is old sets of cards and standard cards. Every set before a specific set in mtg's history

Vinhta12

Make a modern game, I want to play

Gorzo

A wild Gorzo appears and approves of this thoughtfully made how-to. Good on you, sir!

Thank you Gorzo you great man! Anything to help the iMtg community!

I like this idea but haven't tried it yet, I assume one could play with a real deck and just tell the other person what you play, just like with the digital draw deck, but thanks for making this, I believe I'll give it a shot :)

Jarrk

Np man and yeh i normally use a deck irl to play but sometimes i use the deck tester on tappedout.com to try out something before i purchase the singles or theres another way to do that through a Windows/Apple compatible program called Cockatrice which is completely free mtg with every card at your disposal and i think its more similar to playing some mtg irl than other digital mtg games.
:D
Thanks for the feedback!

Me and a fellow wizard have been playing by text for the last three days, this seems to be much easier. Awesome brain spawn :)

Apathy Reactor

Wait... What about instants and counterspells... They seem to be confusing over text.

Ieatfood7

It works pretty well with counter spells. It teaches you to slow down a little. Like if you want to play two spells on your turn, wait for the other player to confirm resolution of the first before doing the second.

That said, if they are tapped out or playing mono green or something, you can always post you entire turn to save time. Just be prepared to backtrack your plays (and let them know what you plan to do) if they have a surprise response to your first action.

text based magic works surprisingly well

I was reading up on some of the tourneys. Very straightforward, information is presented in a beautifully understandable format, pretty comfortable with the lingo; just don't understand the logistics yet.
