Is there a website where I could pick up some cheap altered basics, or is eBay/Amazon my best option?

Altered how? Your best bet is to make your own. Hand done is expensive, and zendikar is "too mainstream" probably.

There's a person on Etsy that makes some nice alters. I picked up a few Lord of the Rings and Star Wars lands. He uses foil basic lands...charges like $5 per card

Those are some sweet forests! I own a plotter, printer and scanner, is it difficult to make your own?

Mick has mastered the art of printing direct on card, like really.

I do appliqué proxies to foils which are a bit easier.

While I don't own any of his work I think it is masterful.

ayye! thank you dudes! you guys are too kind. I think the main thing for doing it is getting lucky with a printer that wont get the cards stuck, and I fell upon a very nice laser one. If yours dont get stuck its pretty simple. I think its the easiest way of altering or proxying, but like Llama learned the hard way, it can break a printer if its not the right one.
