It's been a while since I've watched any anime, but I really enjoyed Death Note.

Starting up on Sword Art Online now, which reminds me a bit of a book I've recently read, and looks like it could be pretty good.

Listing bad anime would take the better half of a millennium. Might look into samurai champollo now. I've watched since I was a kid in Germany on a military base, I owe it all to astroboy! Grant it I have greatly evolved (ie replace evil robots, with vampire nazis from the hellsing ultimate series). But no matter how old I get anime is still one of my first loves. Aside from FMA anyone come across any good "steampunk" style anime?

I want really into Dragon Ball Z, Gundam Wing, and Trigun when I was younger, but have since stopped keeping up with any anime. Might have to get back into it.

Oh, and Akira was great.

I have literally watched probably around 40-50 different anime titles.

Everything listed here and so so much more.

My favorite hands down is Sword Art Online. On my 6th rewatch now. Just can't get enough.

Some of my other favorites are Oreimo, Sekerei, Baka and Test, Soul Eater, Naruto and Shippuden, Bleach, FMA and Brotherhood, Clannad After Story, High School DXD, Maid-Sama, Haganai, Toradora!.

Just too many.

Elfen Lied, dat ending. And out of all the violent and gory scenes in it. The only one I couldn't fully watch was when the kids bullied her and the puppy.

I literally had to skip over it cause I couldn't take it.

I think I order to cut himself off from the world (people) was the only true way to become the no.1. But he can't do it alone, so his psyche broke off like a starfish and gave him a older role model, to help him sort through all the emotional turmoil. Also every anime needs a old man, just law.

I enjoyed parts of Blood+. Ultimately I was saddened by the way it went. Same with "Highschool of the Dead". Trigun was also super cool, then got progressively less so as it went on.

Desert Punk was cool too, don't think I've seen that mentioned. FLCL is solid.

Anime always came to the United States very late, we were several years behind, several decades in some cases. What I like most about the anime formula is - it ends. We don't have 8 seasons of nonsense like we do some American shows. Most of the profound and amazing anime shows end in a certain amount of time: with the exceptions of One Piece, Dragonball Z and InuYasha.

I was so sad when they were mean to that little girl and her dog! I couldn't take it either. I know it's just a cartoon, but why do you gotta be mean?!? She was just trying to be like everyone else.

Speaking of trigun, just got back from a convention, the main event being an anime human chess match.  Wolfwood was a bishop and he destroyed one of the enemies in like 5 seconds.  Was epic, not to mention Ezio as one of the kings, was so epic, but, I digress.

I like that it ended, not how it ended. Instead of dragging it on for 9 years where only a few things happen and none of it is very interesting. I enjoy short series, because the story telling and "action" are packed into a smaller narrative that makes the story telling more important.

Highschool of the Dead just started out so strong, and became an anime about people with weird hair, over-the-top nonsense and too many anime conventions. It didnt need all of that junk, and just became that out of nowhere.

When things waver too much on their tone it just strikes me as silly. Highschool of the Dead was like a drama about surviving the apocalypse and watching everyone you love die, then a slapstick comedy about a bunch of misfits, then an 'unexpected harem' story about some dude coping, then an over the top invincible super person killing everything, and Ect. Ect.

I don't know why people hate GT, I loved it. But FMA wasn't supposed to be a manga adaptation like brotherhood. It was essentially a kid friendlier Sunday morning cartoon with the characters and some basic plot lines from the manga.

Brotherhood was meant to be the actual animation of the manga.

From what I remember when they were making the primal anime they were passing the manga and ended up making their own story and when the manga caught up it was way different. The beginnings of the 2 are quite similar but once u get halfway through you start to notice. Then they made brotherhood because of this reason... Havnt researched anything that's just what I remember

Well everyones mentioned a lot of my favorites. So I'll start by listing some things from my crunchy roll account

must watch:
campione!: awesome series, gratuitous romance and shonen style action!

Hayate the combat butler: best comedy series I've seen in some time / satire

The Pet Girl of Sakurasou: hilarious, with emotional drama! amazing show!

Oreimo: gut buster, hilarious, great characters, great plot, great love? it has it all

Say "I love you": i love this show, the drama gets you on edge, but the love is just so kawaii

Oreshura: also hilarious, more drama, great characters and plot, to short i want more!

Nakaimo - My Sister is Among Them!: very silly, very romantic, but a nice new approach to the whole romance thing

Maoyu: political, army, romance, shonen. pretty good series with fun characters maybe not the first you watch, but a high priority

GJ CLUB: absolutely hilarious, hints of romance, more fun watching this than a lot of other shows, watch it if your feeling down.

Gosick: absolutely without a doubt one of my favorites, romance and surprisingly enough shonen "mystery" drama just a really really good show

HENNEKO – The Hentai Prince and the Stony Cat - i hope this show gets another season, hilarious romantic ecchi comedy

Listen to Me, Girls, I'm Your Father!: hilarious plot, absolutely loved every bit of this series, short but sweet needs to be more coming out!

Little Busters!: can't believe i forgot about this one, it's another one made by the clannad/angel beats company.. definitely doesn't disappoint emotional when it needs to be, hilarious when it needs to be, amazing dialogue!

My Little Monster: all i can say is HA, great show, lots of drama, and sugar sweet moments.. and stupidity

My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU: my teen romantic comedy is.... WRONG as i expected, the characters are excellent and story is well delivered

good:
A Bridge to the Starry Skies - Hoshizora e Kakaru Hashi: a good clean cut romance

Myself; Yourself: emotional romantic, worth watching

Photo Kano: in a game you could go back and get each girls endings, in this show he does!

Mashiroiro Symphony: makes you go awwwww, have fun trying to figure out which girl he goes for

Love Live! School Idol Project: you know this is the only girl group show i've watched, and it was pretty fun and enjoyable, you'll love the comedy and characters just don't expect any romance.

Kotoura-San: mystery psychic romance silly comedy

Ano Natsu de Matteru / if you liked please teacher you'll love this

Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day / very emotional, semi romance

Astarotte's Toy: not your typical romance but a good one.

Da Capo III: gratuitous romance, happy go lucky story, fun to watch

Ef - A Tale of Memories: emotional romance

Ef - A Tale of Melodies: sequel to tale of memories, emotional romance

okay:
amnesia: not a bad love story, convoluted plot, tiring to watch

Happiness!: it delivered the plot so well/romance

Kanokon: silly ecchi romantic comedy, but for some reason not very captivating

Fortune Arterial: not the best or worst romance i've seen, i've you've seen them all definitely come back to it

Good Luck! Ninomiya-kun: another one to come back to, it's alright, but the others are better, worth a watch, and a pretty good ending.

Demon King Daimao:  not bad not incredible, i almost put this in good category, definitely worth watching, romance and action, its just short and feels forced

Dragon Crisis: also pretty good and worth a watch, but just so short it felt forced, also romance and action, and a pretty satisfying ending

Skip Beat!: it gets better around early middle of the series, but worth a watch.. if you can get past the first few episodes... you can definitely feel its age

11eyes: generic shonen/romance

Special category and very good for what they do:

Another: very creepy ghost story, excellent characters, .poo. gets bad [in a good way]

Flowers of Evil: unless you hate feeling good about anything don't watch this, it's addictive in it's own right after you start watching, but you hate everything about it, and yourself after starting it, it will have a second season coming... gives you bad vibes...

H2O: Footprints in the Sand : you want to watch this one.. you'll hate to watch this one because it's so so  so sad, i mean it isn't but then it is.. i mean... things that happen here.... ='(  very good show and worthy of must watch... if you want to cry

Mysterious Girlfriend X: addictive for sure, but very awkward... you want to watch it, but your like hmmm? what? okay? but yeah it's a fun watch

School Days: everyone should watch this show at some point.. cute love anime right?? it's a trap!

The Severing Crime Edge: very similar to future diary, except different plot and delivery, and the romance here isn't as chaotic but the series is just as psychological thrilling

Only anime I've ever truly felt the need to watch in original Japanese was Bleach simply so they would subtitle some of the Japanese text that appears in the show even when it's dubbed in English.

I'm not such a fan of it :P never really had any interest but I have a question about one. Sooooooo a while ago my friend told me I should get into it but I had no interest (I've seen a few but never liked them) then a while later I was drinking with some people and was talking with one of their girlfriends who knew I like creepy stuff and that chat came up again... She suggested elfen lied. Again no interest but a few days ago I was looking through songs on YouTube and found some scenes from it in a related video and thought what the hell. Well anyway I watched it and...

HOLY CRAP GORY SHOW O.O

Definitely has me interested haha. I curious if anyone has seen it and if so, is it any good?? What are some good websites to watch it?

I watched it a while back. It was extremely gory and disturbingly violent. The story was good, but due to the extreme violence and near constant nudity, do NOT be watching that one unless you're 17+. Respect the age warning on it. I was about 19-20 I think when I watched it, and there were a few times when the graphicness genuinely disturbed / bothered me. And I am not easily bothered.

yeah if that's your first experience with that kind of anime there are a lot more that are even better, story/plot wise. a lot of people know about the lovey dovey and shonen anime types but theres a lot of horror supernatural and seinen anime out there to with gratuitous violence.

where you can watch it, most likely netflix, while your at it you should check out, future diary, akira, and another.
all very good plot/storys with heavy gory violence and action

Golden time: has the feels to be one of the best romances i've seen in a while, right up there with toradora and clannad
my mental choices are interfering with my teen romantic comedy.  <= haven't seen something this funny in a long time

If you really wanna scare them straight, the last half of Attack on Titan's pilot episode does fantastically

Or akira.

Elfen lied which has been mentioned would be effective.

Another and my.personal favorite future diary would mess them up to.

Story overview

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni takes place during June 1983, at a fictional rural village called Hinamizawa(雛見沢?) (based on the village of Shirakawa, Gifu, aWorld Heritage Site),[1][2] which has a population of approximately 2,000. The main character, Keiichi Maebara, moves to Hinamizawa and befriends his new classmates Rena Ryugu, Mion Sonozaki, Rika Furude, and Satoko Houjou. Keiichi joins their after-school club activities, which consist mostly of card and board games (and punishment games for the loser, usually him). Hinamizawa appears to be a normal, peaceful, rural village to Keiichi. However, the tranquillity abruptly ends after the annual Watanagashi Festival, a celebration to commemorate and give thanks to the local god,Oyashiro. Keiichi learns that every year for the past four years, one person has been murdered and another has gone missing on the day of the Watanagashi Festival. Keiichi himself soon becomes drawn into the strange events surrounding the Watanagashi Festival and Oyashiro. In each story arc, he or one of his friends become paranoid, and a crime is committed. Usually, the crime involves the murder of one of their own friends. While it seems impossible to tell their delusions apart from the mystery of Hinamizawa, slowly the truth is revealed.

As for my history with anime, I love:
Code Geass
Death Note
Gurren Lagann
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (I've watched both. This is my favorite)

I've watched Naruto Shippuden up until 4th great ninja war, and I kinda got tired of it. It keeps dragging on. I keep telling myself to just read the manga.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (I've watched both. This is my favorite)

I've watched Naruto Shippuden up until 4th great ninja war, and I kinda got tired of it. It keeps dragging on. I keep telling myself to just read the manga.
I don't know what they're thinking with naruto, the manga is at the best parts ever, and right before the anime starts that part they start doing filler episodes. They have released filler for the last 15 episodes or so. And it makes no sense. They weren't even catching up to the manga, they've got at least 45 episodes of material separating the two from each other. Fracking 15 filler episodes and soon to be more. On crap we already know.

Honestly, I love filler episodes because they usually have decent comedy relief, but then the season's over soon and it's like FINISH THE STORY PLZZZ :'(

(Never watched Naruto though but that sounds like it'd be all of the bull bull.)

I need to just sit down and watch both Vampire Hunter D (everyone tells me it is amazing, and the artist who did it did Castlevania Dracula X.)
And Hellsing (only ever got to see the first episode.)

No game no life (log horizon meets outbreak company?)
Brynhilder in the darkness (a lot like Elfien lied)
and
Nanana's buried treasure (dunno, it's pretty cool though)

All very good series this season

I'm currently on a renewed anime kick. But I am having to do it on Netflix Instant.

Recent finished:
Sword Art Online (as a former MMO player I really enjoyed it)

Currently watching:
D-Gray Man

Up next:
Fairy Tale
Black Butler
Attack on Titan (when English dub is released)

Open to any suggestions. Already watched FMA, Hellsing, Bebop and a lot of older ones.

Watch that one right now. A bit more cutesy than I usually enjoy but so far it's enjoyable. You have different thoughts?

nah, I'm on episode 31 and I love it so far; It's as good as if not better than the manga.
Also: yes it's kinda cutesy but it's very lovable with both good humor and action.

I brought it back from the dead of the second page; two weeks isn't that long. It was still fresh at least. Besides, this thread can still be revived with relevant and new discussion.

Think I'm on ep15 right now. Not read the manga. The show is an interesting pace change after D-Gray Man, who he's pissed me off since Funimation didn't bother to dub the 2nd set.

I'm glad I can say I know other who watch anime now. I have A friend who watches anime with me, but other than Fairy Tail we watch completely separate genres. I watch, as he calls them, dranime (drama anime), fantasy, mystery, and some action anime.

I suggest using hummingbird.me as a place to keep track of animes you've watched. If anyone wants to add me on it my username is deebiia.

Welcome to the discussion. And actually, I most often prefer the darker, grittier anime but I'm open to anything that actually has a good story to it.

My only gripe is the all-Japanese cast (and the lack of trueness to the original characters).  Mikasa is the only Asian-esque character in the actual show, and Armin is, well, blonde.
